Vernon is a lovely city located five miles (8.0 kilometers) south of downtown Los Angeles, California, and is the closest city to the city with a zip code of 90058. Ranchers James J. Vernon, Thomas J. Furlong, and John B. Leonis, a businessman, founded Vernon in 1905 to stimulate industrial growth along the area's railroads. John Leonis, a Basque immigrant, arrived in Southern California in 1880 to work for his uncle, Miguel Leonis and later built his ranch southeast of downtown Los Angeles on unincorporated county land. He convinced railroad officials to install spur tracks off the main lines and incorporated the neighboring three miles (4.8 km) as the first "exclusively industrial" city in the southwestern United States, recognizing the importance of the three major railroads that ran through the area.

Vernon's founders promoted Vernon as a "sporting town" in 1907 on property leased from Leonis. In 1908, an entrepreneur named Jack Doyle created the Vernon Avenue Arena, where the Pacific Coast League built a baseball diamond and conducted 20-round world championship bouts. From 1909 until 1925, the Vernon Tigers were a minor league baseball team in the Pacific Coast League. In 1919 and 1920, the squad won back-to-back PCL championships. The Los Angeles Maiers and the Los Angeles McCormicks were two Southern California Trolley League teams that played at the ballpark in 1910.

The city's principal industries include food service production, metalworking, and the manufacture of glass and plastic equipment. The city owns housing, and few people work within the city lines.
