The gusher surged 114 feet (35 meters) in the air because of the high gas pressure. Signal Hill was soon engulfed in over 100 oil derricks, earning it the nickname "Porcupine Hill'' due to its prickly look from afar. Many of the authentic oil wells and pumpjacks have since vanished, but Signal Hill remains a productive oil field with multiple wells and derricks. The region around Signal Hill is currently a mix of residential and commercial properties.

Signal Hill is governed by a council-manager system. The City Council is made up of five members who are elected to four-year staggered terms; the mayor is chosen from among the council members. Signal Hill is represented on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors by 4th District Supervisor Janice Hahn.
