In 1841, Alta California Governor Juan Alvarado granted Mexican property grants to Andres Duarte, a Mexican soldier, and Hugo Reid, a naturalized Mexican citizen of Scottish ancestry, for Rancho Azusa de Duarte and Rancho Santa Anita, respectively. Parts of these two ranchos make up Monrovia.

Rancho Santa Anita passed through various owners before being purchased by E.J. Smith, a multimillionaire silver baron and rancher. Baldwin was "lucky" enough to get it in 1875.
