In 1953, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $2-million loan to fund the construction of the marina. Groundbreaking began shortly after, in the early years of John F. Kennedy's administration.

With construction almost complete, the marina was in danger due to a winter storm in 1962-1963. The storm ravaged the marina and caused millions of dollars in damages. A plan to build a breakwater at the mouth of the marina was put into effect, with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors appropriating about $2.1 million to build it. Marina del Rey was formally dedicated on April 10, 1965, with the marina costing approximately $36.25 million for its construction.
